Join Voices Against Brain Cancer (VABC) in the spirit of the late NYRR president Fred Lebow (1932-1994) and all others who have fought brain cancer and brain tumors. VABC was founded by the Lichtenstein Family in loving memory of their son and brother, Gary, who lost his battle with brain cancer in 2003. The mission of VABC is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community, and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.

5K Walk/Run & Family Food Festival to Benefit Breast Cancer Research
Sunday, May 22, 2011 in Pacific Palisades
The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation (DSLRF), a non-profit, 501 (c) 3 breast cancer organization, is proud to announce the Fourth Annual Love Walk/Run on May 22, 2011. For the first time, the event will add a running component to the 5K as well as a family food festival. The walk/run starts at Pacific Palisades Branch Library at 861 Alma Real Drive in Pacific Palisades, CA. Registration opens at 9 AM; Walk starts at 10 AM.
For more information and to register, visit dslrf.kintera.org/lovewalk2011.
“The LOVE Walk/Run raises money for innovative and groundbreaking breast cancer research that focuses on prevention and finding the cause with a goal to stop breast cancer before it even starts,” said Dr. Susan Love, president and medical director of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. “Here’s your chance to support a local breast cancer organization that has a national reach.”
The Fourth Annual Love Walk/Run is organized in partnership with the Pacific Palisades Junior Women’s Club and is sponsored in part by: City National Bank, Merrill Lynch, On Assignment, CareerBuilder, HUB International, Prudential Realty and Rose Greene Financial Services. This year’s media sponsors include K-EARTH 101 and KFWB NEWS TALK 980.
The 5K course takes participants through the beautiful Huntington neighborhood of the Pacific Palisades and is an opportunity to join local breast cancer survivors and other members of the community interested in eradicating this disease.
Over the past three years, the Love Walk has raised more than 0,000 for the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. One hundred percent of these proceeds are used to fund research that is moving breast cancer beyond a cure.
After the walk/run, the community is invited to enjoy a family food festival with several local food trucks, including: Let’s Be Frank, Coolhaus Ice Cream, Del’s Lemonade and the Hungry Nomad Truck! Plus, various free activities for the kids.
Susan M. Love, MD, MBA, a resident of Pacific Palisades, is a clinical professor of surgery at UCLA and President of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation (www.dslrf.org). A founder of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, she was appointed by President Clinton to the National Cancer Advisory Board. Her New York Times bestseller Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book is now in its fifth edition and is still considered to “the bible for women with breast cancer.”
The mission of DSLRF is to eradicate breast cancer and improve the quality of women’s health through innovate research, education and advocacy. For more information visit www.dslrf.org.

Ruairi Quinn says "It is vital that St Luke’s is not sold off to private developers for a huge apartment block. The Minister must commit to not sign any contracts until after the election."

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Image by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District
By Cecilia “Cecy” Ordonez
Many of you have been affected by having someone close to you who is bravely fighting, or fought, breast cancer – myself included. Six years ago, my mother was diagnosed with stage 3 aggressive breast cancer with a 3 inch tumor. My mother, a single parent of three, did not have any money for insurance and consequently was treated at General Hospital. It was horrifying to go with her to the appointments and see the massive amount of women who were are all being treated for the same disease, many of which we befriended and have tragically succumbed to the disease. Thankfully, after a long battle with chemotherapy, radiation and finally a lumpectomy, my mother beat the cancer. She has been a survivor for 5 years!
According to BreastCancer.org, approximately one out of every eight women in the United States will develop an invasive form of breast cancer within her lifetime. This is an unfortunate reality in today’s world. In addition, BreastCancer.org reports that about 39,840 women in the U.S. were expected to die in 2010 from breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1990. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in October and is celebrated to bring awareness and education to help save lives. Here are some ideas for you to bring awareness to you and the women in your life: learn to do a breast self examine; find out if you are overweight/obese by calculating your (BMI) body mass index (overweight and obese women — defined as having a BMI over 25 –have a higher risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer compared to women who maintain a healthy weight, especially after menopause); wear pink throughout the month and/or wear a pink ribbon; participate in a 5k breast cancer walk; honor a survivor in your life; educate yourself about the risk factors; make a donation to breast cancer research; and/or schedule your mammogram if you are over 40 (or 35 with first female relative with history of breast cancer). Breast Cancer Awareness can really help make a difference in our society’s fight against this disease.
One easy way to decrease your risk of breast cancer is through exercise. Exercise is one of the most important components of successful health promotion and disease prevention for both you and your family, at any age and level of physical ability. Don’t make exercise a chore, instead, pick something that you will enjoy doing: walking, walking your dog, going to the park, playing a sport, washing your car or the car of your elderly neighbor, hula dancing, playing catch – whatever your choose, the important factor is to have FUN. “Army Strong and Taking Care of People” starts with taking care of YOURSELF. If you need help getting started, call me to join the Fit To Win program today!

Day One Hundred Forty: What about Prostate Cancer?

As of today, there are 323 Breat Cancer groups on flickr. There are two prostate cancer specific groups.
And breast cancer has a pink ribbon that everyone has on their cars, bookbags, and even bodies.
Why the lack of support for prostate cancer? Is it because everyone agrees that breasts are beautiful while penises are… well….
Or is it just easier to rally around a disease that affects women because they’re viewed as more fragile?
Not that I’m hating on breast cancer support. I’m just curious why there isn’t the same level of prostate cancer support.
PS – I don’t suffer from it. Just curious about this difference in coverage.
Day 238/365 – A Different type of Apple

Steve Jobs has retired from Apple for undisclosed health reasons. Does this mean that he’ll be uploaded to the Cloud soon?
***EDIT***
Okay, stupid joke aside, my photo from 3 months ago suddenly turns into my usual "Someone who had an impact on me" obituary photo. Steve’s influence on me wasn’t so much via the iBrand, and it wasn’t so much on the Apple II (despite learning to program on it), but it was for the huge gravitational pull he had on the early days of Atari. Him, Steve Wozniak and the game Breakout – without that, Atari wouldn’t have been as huge as it was, and I wouldn’t be the nerd that I am today.

CAMP HUMPHREYS – More than 350 people, dressed is various shades of pink, turned out to help Army Community Service’s Exceptional Family Member Program and the Girls Scouts join forces, Oct. 21, to host the “Breast Cancer Walk to Raise Awareness,” at Zoeckler Track.
With October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Takesha Green, the Camp Humphreys Exceptional Family Member Program manager and the event organizer, said she wanted “to provide a platform for our community that would bring awareness to not only Breast Cancer but cancer as a whole.”
Leslie Edens, the wife of Brig. Gen. Timothy J. Edens, the 2nd Infantry Division assistant division commander for support, provided opening remarks and then helped lead the first lap of walkers around the track during the “silent lap.” With the completion of the first lap, Staff Sgt Jorge Jimenez, of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion (Attack), 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, played music throughout the remaining laps.
Green said that she wanted every “woman, man and adolescent across all age groups aware of the importance of breast health and screening exams.”
Today, with advanced medical treatments and early detection, breast cancer is no longer considered a death sentence. There are more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in the United States alone. And with early detection the survival rate is over 90 percent.
“This event was more than I could have ever imagined,” Green said. “It kind of took on a mind of its own. The overwhelming support from the community and throughout the Peninsula was mind blowing. I had to pause for a minute just to take it all in. I couldn’t have asked for better weather and greater community support. The vibe alone was just amazing.”
Whether they were running or walking, “people were enjoying themselves and having a great time,” she added. “This event definitely exceeded my expectations.”
